David
Gower OBE
Cricketer
David Gower began his career with Leicestershire in 1975, where he
played until 1989. He was first ‘capped’ in 1977, served
as captain in 1984-6, and then again in 1988-9. He then played for
Hampshire during 1990-93, where he was ‘capped’ once again
in 1990.
David's Test debut was
in 1978 versus Pakistan at Edgebaston. Since then David has endured
117 Test Matches, 31 as captain (1984-6, 1989), and 114 One-day Internationals.
He scored 8231 Test runs, including 18 Test Match hundreds. At one
point David was ranked equal first in the world, and is still the
second highest Test Match run scorer for England behind Graham Gooch,
and ahead of Geoffrey Boycott. In 1992 David received an OBE.
David has written several
books including an autobiography entitled ‘Gower, the Autobiography’.
Now a broadcaster and
journalist, David spends much of his time hosting SKY's coverage of
international cricket. He also spent five years as a commentator for
BBC TV, presenting ‘Gower's Cricket Monthly’, not to be
confused with ‘David Gower's Cricket Weekly’ on Radio
5.
He was the Team captain
opposite Gary Lineker on BBC TV's ‘They Think It's All Over’,
with Nick Hancock and Rory McGrath, with whom he has also worked on
the BBC ‘Holiday’ programme. After two years as the Sunday
Express cricket correspondent, and two more as a columnist for the
Sunday Telegraph, he now writes periodically for various publications.
David's interests include
safaris and wildlife conservation, in which he is actively involved
as a Trustee of the David Shepherd Conservation Foundation, and as
a patron of Save (Australia). Other interests include wildlife photography,
ski-ing, tennis and classical music. He has ridden in a British bobsled
and is a member of the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club, home of the Cresta
Run.
