Gerry
& The Pacemakers
Hear
the original sound of all the hits from these
'merseybeat' legends.
Gerry and the Pacemakers
are regarded as one of the bedrock bands of the 60's Mersey sound.
However, the band had been playing during the 50's. Gerry's first
band was formed with his brother Freddie and they went under a variety
of titles, but in 1959 Gerry and The Pacemakers was formed. Gerry
was on vocals and lead guitar, his brother Fred on drums, Lee Maguire
on piano and John ‘Les’ Chadwick on bass guitar.
They performed at all
the leading venues around the Mersey area and had a residency at the
Top Ten Club in Hamburg.
In
1963 they signed with Brian Epstein and topped the charts with How
Do You Do It followed by I Like It and then perhaps
the most popular song of all-time You'll Never Walk Alone.
Three consecutive No1's in one year is a record that has been equalled
but not surpassed. The band continued their chart success until they
disbanded in 1967.
Gerry became a solo artiste
and starred in the West End Musical ‘Charlie Girl’. This
was followed up by the TV series ‘The Sooty Show’ and
‘Hold the Front Page’.
In 1973, Gerry formed
a new line-up for the Pacemakers to back his tours all over the world
and make records.
In 1985, Gerry fronted
the band known as The Crowd to re-record You'll Never Walk Alone in aid of the Bradford Disaster Appeal. It went to No 1 and is the
first time a record has topped the charts by the same artiste after
such a period. Gerry is a real rock legend.
