ABC

ABC is a New Wave band who achieved major success in the 1980s. Originally billed as “Vice Versa” the group changed their name to ABC in 1980 after adopting lead singer Martin Fry into the band. Despite many changes in musical direction they are best known for a combination of synthesizers and orchestra strings with a highly polished sound.

The band’s debut album The Lexicon of Love reached the top shot in the U.K charts and became a worldwide success earning a Platinum certification and going Gold in the U.S. From it came three U.K Top 10 singles, “Poison Arrow,” “The Look of Love” and “All of My Heart,” all of which became big hits across the Atlantic. ABC followed their debut with the moderately successful Beauty Stab (U.K Silver) and How to be a...Zillionaire! albums before returning to critical and commercial acclaim with 1987’s Alphabet City, which reached No. 7 on the U.K charts and featured the U.K and U.S hit single “When Smokey Sings.” In 1990 the band released its first greatest hits package, Absolutely which mirrored Alphabet City’s success, reaching the top ten on the U.K chart.

The band have found continued public success, performing on the massive 2008 Regeneration Tour alongside fellow 80’s acts The Human League, Belinda Carlisle and A Flock of Seagulls, going on to headline the tour the following year with Berlin and Cutting Crew. 2009 also saw an orchestral re-working of The Lexicon of Love at the Royal Albert Hall which sparked renewed interest in the band and led to acclaim from the British music press.
