Aswad
Aswad are an acclaimed British reggae group who have been performing since the mid 1970s. Their signature sound blends strong R&B and Soul influences with traditional Reggae.
Since their debut release in 1976 Aswad have released 21 studio albums, many of which, including 1988’s Distant Thunder and 1994’s Rise and Shine have found major success in the U.K. Throughout their career the band have achieved nine Top 40 singles, including the late eighties number one “Don’t Turn Around,” it’s top 20 follow up single “Give a Little Love” as well as early nineties hit “Shine” which reached the Top 5 on the U.K charts. The band continued their success into the nineties with the release of a best of collection Greatest Hits, which peaked in the Top 20.
In addition to releasing their own hits Aswad have also found success writing, collaborating and remixing for other artists. Their remix of Ace of Base’s cover of their own “Don’t Turn Around” reached the U.K top ten while the song they co-wrote and produced with Vanessa Mae “Classical Gas” became a top thirty success in 1995. Later in 1998, they released “Invisible Sun,” originally by The Police, which was released as a collaberation with Sting. The band also holds the record for being the only band to have performed with each member of Bob Marley’s touring band The Wailers.
