Cerys Matthews

Former lead singer of rock Welsh band Catatonia.

An overview…

2009 and 2010 have been exceptionally busy years creatively for Cerys and as we begin 2011 there appears to be no stopping the crazy innovative buzz of activity.

Early 2011 will see Cerys heavily involved in writing, presenting, performing and releasing brand new material. Her first children’s book will be published in January along with the airing of a BBC 2 Television series where she will both discover and mentor new young talent. Her passion for poetry will continue with involvement in the Dylan Thomas Awards in Swansea.

Other highlights of early 2011 will see Cerys presenting a Radio 4 documentary chronicling the background of Pippi Longstocking, a television documentary exploring the history of Cuba as well as continuing with her successful
6 Music Sunday Morning show (between 10 and 12).
As always she will again release a brand new album of fresh material to follow 2010’s sensational album TIR.

A short history…

2010 has already seen great success for Cerys who released TIR on Rainbow City Records, her own label, in June. A labour of love, TIR publishes photos from her family archive from the 1880s to 1940s of people at work and play. Shopkeepers, farmers, horse-breakers, quarry men, mariners, tailors, organ players all make for a great insight to the landscape that produced these songs.
Taking a mixture of songs, some from Victorian times, some hymns, some more obscure, and some huge great hulking classics of iconic stature like Bread of Heaven, Sosban Fach, Myfanwy and the National anthem, Cerys presents them in TIR almost as if they were freshly written, with voice and simple accompaniment and little else, just a tender appreciation and a thirst for their historical significance. The album also includes a duet with Bryn Terfel on the blacksmiths’ song Migldi Magldi.

There are 36 pages bursting with life with notes written by Cerys and Roy Saer (of the Welsh folk society and St Fagan's). The whole package is a treasure trove of life in music and pictures.

TIR followed on from what was considered to be Cerys Matthews’ best album yet Don’t Look Down, released in October 2009.

("A lovely new album ... Matthews knocks the doubters for six, with singing that contains everything, juance, understanding, authenticity" (4* The Times)
Two sell out tours followed in October 2009 and April 2010 culminating in Cerys’ headline performance at this years WOMAD festival in July.

Cerys has long held an interest in poetry and literature and is fast becoming a widely sought after presenter and contributor in this area.
