David Essex
David Essex, OBE is an English actor and singer, who has enjoyed a varied show business career since 1971.
Essex’s career began with starring as the lead in the stage musical Godspell in 1971, he later starred in the film That’ll Be The Day. During this year he also kick started his music career with the international self penned hit single “Rock On,” which reached No.3 on the U.K. charts and became a hit in the U.S. Essex’s follow up to the single “Lamplight,” also reached the British Top10. This began a period of massive chart success for the star, including two No.1 hit singles “Gonna Make You a Star” and “Hold Me Close.” At this time he appeared in Stardust, releasing the title song as single, again reaching the U.K. Top 10. In 1978 he stared in the original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita, with his recording of “Oh What a Circus” reaching No.3 on the U.K. charts. In 1985 he achieved his tenth Top10 with “Tahiti,” from the musical Mutiny! which he co-wrote and starred in.
In 1999 Essex became an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. The following year he appeared in an episode of Heartbeat. In 2005 he appeared as a guest vocalist on St Etienne’s album Tales from Turnpike House and appeared on Channel 4 documentary Bring Back...The Christmas Number One. Most recently he has enjoyed renewed success on the stage, appearing in Footloose, Boogie Nights 2 and another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Aspects of Love.
