Lulu, OBE is a Scottish singer-songwriter, actress and television personality who has found success since the 1960s right through to present day.
Lulu’s career began at the tender age of 15 with a highly popular cover of The Isley Brothers “Shout,” which reached No.6 on the U.K. charts. The following year she made her debut as a film actress in To Sir, With Love, starring legendary Hollywood actor Sidney Poitier. She released the title track from the soundtrack as a single that year, topping the U.S. charts. It was also during this time that she was given her own television show, Happening for Lulu. In 1969 she entered the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Boom Bang-a-Bang,” which went on to win the competition and chart highly around Europe. Lulu continued her television show and music career side by side from 1968 to 1975, releasing hit singles “Oh Me Oh My (I’m a Fool for You Baby),” “Mr. Bojangles” and James Bond theme “The Man with the Golden Gun” as well as collaborations with David Bowie. Her show was also a huge success, featuring guests as high profile as Jimi Hendrix.
Lulu has continued to be highly successful in the charts, her 1993 collaboration with Take That “Relight My Fire” topped the U.K. charts, renewing interest in the star. In 2000 she was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth. In 2002 she released a Gold certified duets album Together featuring stars such as Elton John and Paul McCartney. In 2009 she toured the U.K. with Anastacia and Chaka Khan as part of the Here Comes the Girls show, highlighted by an appearance on the Royal Variety show.
