Russell Watson

Russell Watson is an English tenor whose music blends operatic and pop styles. He first came to attention singing the U.K. national anthem at the Rugby League Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium, in addition to performances at the final of the Premiership and UEFA Champions League finals the same year.

Watson went on to find major success with debut album The Voice, a collection of arias and covers of pop songs. To date it is the only album released by a British artist to top both the U.K. and U.S. classical charts simultaneously, in addition to reaching the Top5 of the U.K. pop charts. The album went on to win the Classical Brit for Album of The Year and Best Selling Debut. Watson followed this success with second album Encore, which mirrored The Voice’s success winning the Classical Brit for Album of The Year in addition to Best Selling Album. At this time Watson also released a charity single, “Nothing Sacred” which peaked at No.17 on the U.K. charts. Following Encore the singer went to release a further two more successful albums, 2003’s Reprise and 2005’s Amore Musica. In 2006 Watson released his first greatest hits collection The Ultimate Collection and won BBC celebrity singing competition Just The Two Of Us with celebrity partner Sian Reeves.

Recently, Watson has appeared as judge on talent show Last Choir Standing, in addition to releasing an album of easy listening and soul music standards People Get Ready. In 2009 he performed at the opening of the World Games in Taiwan and was critically acclaimed for his role as the lead in former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus’ musical Kristina from Duvernala at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York.
