Chinese Lion and Dragon Dance

The Chinese Lion Dance is a tradition that originated from China in order to scare away beasts from a threatened village. It is now believed to bring good luck and prosperity and is demonstrated by skilled Kung Fu practitioners.

Two performers under each Lion make the lion move as if it is dancing to the accompaniment of drums, gongs and cymbal players. The lions every movement has a specific musical rhythm where the gong and cymbal players follow the drum, and the drum follows the lion. Throughout the performance, the Lion will mimic various moods and demonstrate similar physical gestures allowing the Lion to look life-like.

The Chinese Dragon Dance, like the Lion is performed at special events, weddings, and Chinese New Year. However, the movements of the dragon are very different from the lion. The dragon dances up and down, turns and rolls as if it were flying in the sky or moving through the water to the sounds of drums, gongs and cymbals played by a group of musicians.

Traditionally the Dragon Dance was confined within the Chinese community, but in recent years it has spread outside and become very popular around the world. With the Dragon dance’s demand spreading from events such as festivities and celebrations such as weddings and anniversaries to opening’s of businesses, fun fairs and processions, there is rarely a cultural event without the call of a Chinese Dragon.

Our Chinese Dragon’s come in an array of colours and sizes ranging from 30-100 meters dependant on the amount of people carrying them.

Our Chinese Lions and Dragon’s are available for almost any event including corporate functions, large events and TV and film productions. Our team performs with some of the most beautiful Lions and dragons to a highly skilled and professional level.
